Your thumb joint is the only joint in your hand that can move in all directions. Strong ligaments and muscles hold the CMC joint in position and provide a combination of mobility and stability. The cartilage allows the bones to glide easily during motion. Smooth cartilage covers the ends of the metacarpal and trapezium. The metacarpal bone at the base of your thumb and the trapezium bone in your wrist meet to form the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. Treatment entails realigning the broken bone and providing stabilization while it heals. A Bennett’s fracture causes thumb swelling, pain, and immobility. It results from a forceful injury, such as during fist fighting, playing football, accidents, or a fall. In 1882, Edward Hallaran Bennett, described the fracture of the base of the thumb.A Bennett’s fracture occurs when the bone at the base of the thumb breaks and dislocates. The early diagnosis and treatment are imperative to prevent loss of function of this highly mobile human joint system. The Bennett fracture is an intraarticular fracture that separates the palmar ulnar aspect of the first metacarpal base from the remaining first metacarpal and known as the most common fracture found in the base of the thumb.
